The Wilderness

God revealed Himself to the Israelites through His deeds and ways. Today’s lesson focuses on more on God’s deeds as seen in the wilderness. Think about this, even though millions of people saw God’s deeds on a daily basis they still chose not to follow His ways, thus most were eliminated from entering the promised land. What can we learn from their example?

Activities

Part The Red Sea Balloon Game

In Action
Before your lesson blow up a lot of balloons (alternative socks wadded into a ball) and place them in the middle of the floor. Divide your children up into two teams, mom or dad could help the younger sibling. Each team should stand at opposite ends of the room. Remind your children that God separated the water so that there was a wall of water on both sides and dry land on which the Israelites could walk. Tell them that they are going to “separate” the water and see who can make the biggest wall of “water”. Demonstrate how to pick up a balloon, rub it on yourself or the carpet and then get it to stick to the wall, or sack socks in a wall tower against the wall.

On the word “go” each child should grab a balloon from the pile on the floor, rub the balloon on his or her clothes or hair and try to stick it to the wall on his team’s side of the room. If a child gets it to stick on the wall, he can then go and get another balloon. After a certain amount of time call out, “Stop!” Count the number of balloons stuck to each wall. The team with the most wins.

Remembering the Lord, Candle

Hopefully, you have a candle in the home. If not stock up ASAP! Take a moment to ask your children what they think about when they think of God, specifically what are His deeds (cool things He has done) and what are His ways (the things He asks us to do). If they are able to write, have them write one-word ideas on a piece of tape or Band-Aid, an older sibling or adult could assist youngsters. Then affix those strips to your candle; throughout the week, during meals or devotion times, place the lighted candle near and review the deeds and ways of God.
