Activities

Tear Down the Bad; Build up the Good.

Tearing Down aka Milk Jug Toss
Needed
Bean bags and empty tin cans. Substitute a soft indoor ball, roll of toilet paper or two adult socks wadded into a ball, for the bean bag and empty soda cans or wooden block for the cans.

In Action
Set up “idol” towers with your cans. Utilize the bean bags to try to knock them over. Create different degrees of difficulty by moving the “throwing” position further away. Utilize this time to talk about idols, both then and now.

Talk About It
What is an idol? Basically, it is something that takes the place of God. It can be a thing or person loved more than God, treasured more than God, or enjoyed more than God. As you take turns knocking down the cans, ask your children:

What could be examples of idols that kids might love today more than God?
How could a kid tear those idols down?

Building Up (Picture an ancient scroll craft with the Ten Commandments written out)

Materials
Two Popsicle sticks (need a substitute: long narrow sticks, plastic ware or straws)
Crinkled and coffee/tea stained paper, one per child
Something to write with

In Action
Have your child write (help if needed) and decorate their scroll with the Ten Commandments (See Exodus 20:1-17) Do not put stuff between you and God. Do not worship statues. Be careful with God's name. Keep the Sabbath day special. Honor your father and mother. Do not murder. Keep your marriage promises. Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not covet.
Glue the sticks at the top and bottom, roll up like a scroll.

Talk About It
Did you know that it was a requirement for kings to write the law (Genesis-Deuteronomy) see Deuteronomy 17:18.
How do you think that God’s Word was “lost”?
How did Josiah obey God’s law?
How can we obey God today?
